A visit to Nisqually Delta is all about the birds.
Whether you bring the kids and enjoy a simple stroll along the short loop to the Twin Barns, or gear up for a leg-stretching jaunt out the nearly 5-miles of the raised boardwalk pier, it will be the birds that capture your attention and imagination. The Nisqually Delta Wildlife Refuge plays host to a huge array of waterfowl—both migratory and resident. There are ducks and geese, of course, but also swans and cranes. A huge blue heron rookery resides on the slope at the south side of the refuge and bald eagles gather here in great number, too. What’s more, you can enjoy all those birds—and far more besides—from a flat, well-maintained trail. Indeed, according to some birdwatchers here, there are more than 100 resident species and half as many more migratory species. A total of more than 20,000 individual birds migrate through the refuge each year.
