For the diehard hikers still shooting dSLRs, the Pulse Camera Remote from Alpine Laboratories offers a new level of photographic freedom. The slim Pulse slips in your camera’s hotshoe and provides remarkable remote shutter — and indeed, camera — control. Not only does the Pulse give you a remote trigger for individual shots, it allows creative control for some truly artistic imagery.
As someone who has been shooting and selling images from the backcountry for nearly 30 years, I am thrilled with the Pulse. This little tool has elevated both my enjoyment of outdoor photography and the images that result from my shooting.
Using a control app on your smartphone (iOS and Android), photographers can capture long series of time-lapse images, and control those time-lapse series with exposure ramping to improve the image transitions. The Pulse and app also give photographers remote control over long exposure shots, and HDR bracketing (up to 7 exposure value steps).
Photographers can even control shutter and aperture settings, set the camera’s ISO, review thumbnails and histograms, and time-delay the shutter release.
The Pulse unit weighs a mere 1.5 ounces and its lithium-ion battery is USB chargeable. https://alpinelaboratories.com/pages/pulse, $99
